Andhra Pradesh: Woman techie jumped off running train to evade sexual harassment

A trainee software engineer had to jump from a running train in an attempt to escape three men who had been sexually assaulting her in Prakasam district of Andhra Pradesh. The techie, who works as a trainee engineer at Redington Gulf, sustained head injuries.

The 21-year-old was travelling in the Ernakulam-Hazrat Nizamuddin Millennium Express together with two other women. The police have arrested three men including Kurban of Bihar, other two Harikesh Yadav and Sudhakar from Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh.

A case has been filed under sections 342 (wrongful confinement), 506 (criminal intimidation), 509 (insulting the modesty of a woman) and 290 read with section 30 (creating public nuisance) of the Indian Penal Code.

In the train, three men allegedly started harassing one of the women by making obscene gestures. They also started recording the incident on mobile phone. The woman sought the help of other passengers but in vain. Terrified, she ran to the door and jumped off the train. The other two then pulled the chain to stop the train. The woman was taken to Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in an ambulance.
