As you may recall, Google confirmed earlier this week in a support page that it is cognizant of the problem whereby primary proprietors of certain Pixel 6 and subsequent models lack access to media storage. Smartphone models that have been updated to Android 14 and accommodate multiple users, including minor users, guests, users, and restricted profiles, are experiencing this issue in addition to the primary user.

Google announced in an update that the Android update will be made available to affected users within the next two weeks. Although the update is designed to assist in restoring affected devices to a functional state, this may not be the case for all users, as devices that restart frequently will not be able to have their data recovered.
To provide a clearer picture, the matter has the potential to give rise to two distinct types of complications. The first option causes a device reboot and a Factory Data Reset (FDR) notification, which if not backed up results in the loss of all data. The second issue associated with the matter arises when a user rejects the FDR message, leading to the device undergoing multiple reboots accompanied by the display of the message “Pixel is starting.”
“Until the OTA update becomes available, we advise users who are not encountering this issue or who have already performed a factory reset on their device to refrain from creating or logging into a secondary user account on the device,” the support page states.
Users who have configured multiple Google accounts within the principal user or work profiles on their Pixel smartphones are reportedly able to utilize the Android update. Google is conducting over-the-air (OTA) testing of the Android system update for these users.
“This may offer a workaround for devices in which the primary user is unable to access media storage without requiring a data deletion,” Google advised.
It is important to note, however, that users will be required to complete a Google Form in order to register for the update. Once this is completed, they will be sent the test update within a 24-hour timeframe. Additionally, a complete update may require between one and two hours to complete.
In the interim, the manufacturer advised machines that are rebooting repeatedly to perform a factory data reset, stating that it is a potential solution that is only transient. It is essential to note, however, that performing an FDR will result in the complete loss of all data on the device.
The organization published a Google Play system update earlier this week in an effort to prevent the recurrence of the issue on additional devices. If the update has not occurred automatically, users may follow these steps to determine whether it is available for their Pixel device:
- Launch the Settings application.
- Select the option labeled “Security & Privacy Update.”
- To determine whether the Google Play system is up-to-date, select “System Update.”
- Follow the on-screen instructions to apply the update.
