Ascencion Day (Saint Martin) 2024: Saint Martin (Sint Maarten) observes Ascension Day on the forty-first day of Easter, or thirty-nine days subsequent to Easter Sunday. It will be observed on May 9 this year. The holiday, which is also referred to as the Feast of the Ascension, Solemnity of the Ascension of Jesus Christ, or Ascension Thursday, marks the forty-day observance of Jesus Christ’s ascension into heaven following his resurrection. The practice can be historically documented to the fourth and fifth centuries. Despite the universal Christian belief in Jesus’ ascension, the observance of this day is primarily attributed to the Catholic and Anglican faiths.

The History of Ascension Day (Saint Martin)

According to the Christian “Bible,” Jesus of Nazareth was condemned to death and subsequently crucified during the period from 30 to 36 A.D. by the Roman authorities. Following his crucifixion, he was interred in a mausoleum that Joseph of Arimathea, one of his disciples, had purchased. The leading priests and Pharisees beseeched the Roman authorities on the Sabbath to erect a substantial stone over his tomb in an effort to deter thieves from gaining access to his remains.

Notwithstanding this arrangement, three days subsequent to the crucifixion, a divine angel materialized and vanquished the stone, infuriating the Roman guardians to the point of unconsciousness. In Jerusalem, Jesus appeared to a multitude of witnesses for the next fortieth day.

As per the teachings of Luke chapter 24:50–52, “Jesus then led them to Bethany, and bestowed blessings upon them as he raised his hands to heaven.” As He bestowed his blessings upon them, He ascended to heaven and departed from them. They then joyfully returned to Jerusalem after offering him their devotion. They devoted their entire existence to the Temple, where they engaged in the act of glorifying God.

The genesis of the observance of Ascension Day in Saint Martin can be identified in the fourth and fifth centuries. In the latter part of the 15th century, Augustine of Hippo, a philosopher and theologian, made reference to Ascension Day, noting that the Catholic Church had observed this day for quite some time. Frequently mentioned in the Apostolic Constitutions composed between 370 and 385 A.D. was the aforementioned day.

Despite the universal Christian belief in Jesus’ ascension, the observance of this event is primarily confined to the Catholic and Anglican faiths. Presently, Easter is observed through the observance of church services and the extinguishing of the Easter candle. Additionally, individuals engage in processions while towing banners and torches. Vegetables and fruits may be brought to the church for adoration. Saint Martin observes Ascension Day as a national holiday.
