Asian Games Day 9: More medals could be won in athletics, whereas only one medal remains in table tennis. On Sunday, India’s medal count surpassed the 50-mark. Two of the three gold medals won on a given day were earned by track and field competitors. Avinash Sable ran a Games record time to dominate the men’s 1000m steeplechase final while Tajinderpal Singh Toor effectively defended his Asian Games shot put gold. The third gold medal was awarded in the men’s team trap.
Now that elimination rounds have begun, the Indian archery team will attempt to make progress. Sutirtha Mukherjee and Ayhika Mukherjee will attempt to earn at least a silver medal by advancing to the final in women’s doubles table tennis. China’s Meng Chen and Yidi Wang, the world champions in the event, were defeated by the tandem in a shocking quarterfinal match.
