Assam Election 2026 Schedule Out:The Election Commission of India has officially announced the polling schedule of Assam elections. This establishes the election timeline for voters and political parties and candidates throughout the entire state.

The election results will show which political party will lead Assam for five years because more than two crore voters are expected to bring their votes.

Assam Assembly Elections 2026

The Assam Legislative Assembly election takes place every five years to select candidates who will serve in the state legislature. In 2026, voters across Assam will elect 126 Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) from constituencies spread across the state.

The election will show fierce competition between major political parties which include the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Indian National Congress and regional parties and other alliances. The election results will determine which political party will establish the next state government after the current assembly period ends in May 2026.

Assam Election 2026 Schedule Out: Key Dates

  • Date of notification: 16 March 2026
  • Last date to file nominations: 23 March 2026
  • Scrutiny of nominations: 24 March 2026
  • Last date for withdrawal of candidature: 26 March 2026
  • Polling date: 9 April 2026
  • Counting of votes / Result date: 4 May 2026
  • Completion of election process: 6 May 2026

Total Seats and Majority Mark

The Assam Legislative Assembly has 126 seats, and a party or alliance must secure at least 64 seats to form the government in the state.

Candidates compete for each seat in their respective constituencies through first-past-the-post elections which declare victory to the candidate receiving the most votes.

Number of Voters in Assam

The Assam Assembly Elections 2026 will become one of the largest democratic exercises in northeastern India because more than 2.49 crore registered voters will participate according to election authorities.

The electorate includes:

  • Over 1.24 crore male voters
  • Around 1.24 crore female voters

What Happened in the Last Election?

The previous Assam Assembly election was held in March and April 2021 when the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance won a majority to establish a government in the state. The alliance maintained power by winning 75 seats out of 126 available seats.

Himanta Biswa Sarma officially became Chief Minister of Assam after he took his oath in May 2021. The Congress party became the primary opposition force in the state assembly.

The counting of votes for the Assam Assembly Elections 2026 will take place on 4 May 2026 when the final results will be declared.
