Assam polls 2026: Major opposition leaders trailing in early trends

Congress leader Saikia was trailing by 4,967 votes in Sivasagar district's Nazira seat. BJP’s Mayur Borgohain secured 11,607 votes after the second round, compared to Saikia’s 6,640.

Guwahati: All major opposition leaders in Assam, including Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia, Akhil Gogoi, Lurinjyoti Gogoi, Jagadish Bhuyan and Rajen Gohain, were trailing in their respective constituencies, according to Election Commission data on Monday.

Congress leader Saikia was trailing by 4,967 votes in Sivasagar district’s Nazira seat. BJP’s Mayur Borgohain secured 11,607 votes after the second round, compared to Saikia’s 6,640.

Raijor Dal president and MLA Akhil Gogoi, contesting to retain the Sibsagar seat, was trailing after the first round. He polled 3,262 votes against 5,171 votes secured by BJP’s Kushal Dowari.

NDA ally AGP’s Prodip Hazarika secured 443 votes in Sibsagar after the first round, EC data showed.

Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) president Lurinjyoti Gogoi was also trailing his nearest rival from the BJP.

While Gogoi bagged 11,845 votes in three rounds, BJP’s Chakradhar Gogoi received 14,360.

AJP general secretary Jagadish Bhuyan is trailing by 5,759 votes at Sadiya after the second round. He got 5,071 votes against BJP’s Bolin Chetia, who has received 10,830 votes.

Former Union Minister Rajen Gohain of the BJP, who joined the AJP before the polls, is lagging behind BJP MLA Jitu Goswami. Gohain bagged 2,570 votes against Goswami’s 5,324.

On the other hand, AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal, who is contesting from Binnakandi in Hojai district, is leading by 2,869 votes over AJP’s Rejaul Karim Chowdhury after three rounds. While Ajmal received 13,298 votes, Chowdhury bagged 10,429 votes. Ruling alliance member AGP’s Shahab Uddin Majumdar has got 2,537 votes in Binnakandi, the EC data showed.
