The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) told the Supreme Court on Thursday that senior BJP leader LK Advani and 12 others were part of a larger conspiracy to demolish the disputed Babri Masjid. The CBI argued for charges to be revived against these politicians.

The CBI demands the trial to be held in a Lucknow court. It said the top court that Advani and others hadn’t faced conspiracy charges based on technical reasons.

A large crowd of Hindu fanatic destroyed the centuries-old Babri Masjid in 1992. They demolished it with axes, hammers and other tools. The incident triggers a cycle of communal riot that claimed over 3,000 lives.

The disputed demolition was the conclusion of a rotten dispute between Muslims and many Hindus. The latter believed that the Mughal emperor Babur razed a temple at the site believed to be the birthplace of Hindu god Ram.

Advani and 20 others were chargesheeted by CBI under Sections 153A (promoting enmity between classes), 153B (imputations, assertions prejudicial to national integration) and 505 (false statements, rumours etc. circulated with the intent to cause mutiny or disturb public peace) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Subsequently, it had raised charges under Section 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC. But it was quashed by the special court whose decision was upheld by the high court.
