Ballon d’Or 2026 Ceremony Date: The prestigious Ballon d’Or ceremony is set for a historic change in 2026. For the first time since the award was created in 1956, the gala will not be held in Paris. Instead, football’s biggest individual awards night will take place in London on October 26, 2026 marking a major moment in the history of the Ballon d’Or.
Traditionally organized in Paris by French magazine France Football, the Ballon d’Or has become one of the most iconic events in global football. However, organizers UEFA and France Football confirmed that the 2026 edition will move to the English capital as part of the celebrations for the award’s 70th anniversary.
Why Is the Ballon d’Or Moving to London?
The primary reason behind the venue shift is symbolic. According to UEFA, the decision pays tribute to Sir Stanley Matthews, the legendary English footballer who became the very first Ballon d’Or winner in 1956.

“The Ballon d’Or is coming to London. A tribute to English footballer Stanley Matthews, the first winner in the history of the Ballon d’Or, 70 years ago,” read the announcement.
“By staging its 70th edition in the capital of England and the United Kingdom, the Ballon d’Or continues its expansion and further strengthens its status as a globally prestigious brand,” the European football governing body, UEFA, said.
Matthews, widely regarded as one of football’s greatest pioneers, remains an iconic figure in English football history. By choosing London for the landmark 70th edition, organizers aim to honor both the origins of the award and the global growth of football over the past seven decades.
UEFA described London as a “symbolic choice” that reflects the international stature the Ballon d’Or now carries.

A Historic First Outside France
Since its inception by France Football in 1956, the Ballon d’Or ceremony has almost always been associated with Paris. In recent years, the Théâtre du Châtelet became the regular host venue for the gala, including the 2024 and 2025 editions.
Officials said in a statement: “This is a circumstantial and temporary choice, though the increasingly international stature of this prestigious award does leave room to imagine the experience could be repeated elsewhere outside France in the coming years.”
The 2026 ceremony will therefore become the first edition officially staged in England and one of the rare occasions the event is hosted outside France. Organizers believe the move highlights how the Ballon d’Or has evolved from a European prize into a globally recognized football institution.
