The police have filed FIR against 1200 students, hours after Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath ordered a probe into violence inside the prominent Banaras Hindu University (BHU) campus. Over a dozen students were detained on Sunday after their protest turned violent. Police used force to dislodge them.

Soon, a video of a woman student being beaten by cops also made its way to social media and added fuel to the ruckus.

Many officers including station officer (SO) Lanka, CO Bhelupur and one additional city magistrate (ACM) were removed following the violence.

The violence erupted after some students staged a sit-in at the main gate after a female student of the Arts Faculty was allegedly harassed by three men. The protesting group was allegedly lathi-charged by the cops on Saturday night. Many students and two journalists were injured in a lathi-charge incident.

After the violence, the district administration declared holidays till October 2. Uttar Pradesh CM sought a report from the divisional commissioner on the situation.
