Was banned without a question being asked: Zakir Naik

Controversial Islamic preacher Dr Zakir Naik who’s NGO, Islamic Research Foundation was banned said he has no option but to seek legal recourse.

In an open letter, Naik, 51, who is in abroad, said “Not a single question was asked before the ban was imposed. In such a scenario I have no option but to seek legal recourse”

He added that he will pursue all legal options to get the ban repealed and that the judiciary will fail the Modi government in its ‘plans’.

Further he said that no summons or even a notice was issued to him. I should have been able to tell my side of the story, but I was never given a chance, he said. I kept offering my held, but it was not taken, Naik also said.

“Before investigations were done, even before reports submitted, the ban was already decided. IRF was to be banned. Whether it was owing to my religion or some other reason does not matter. What now matters is that my work of 25 years – completely lawful work – has been banned. And that is the most unfortunate thing for this country,” Naik said in his letter.

Talking about Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), Naik said, “The law does not seem to apply to the likes of Rajeshwar Singh, Yogi Adityanath and Sadhvi Prachi who continue to make inflammatory speeches aimed at inciting communal hatred for mere political mileage.”

The NIA has launched a probe into the activities of the Islamic Research Foundation. After the government banned the IRF for five years, the NIA filed a case against the NGO under the provisions of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act. The NIA during a recent raid conducted unearthed several documents and found a scholarship was given to Anas who was recruited into the ISIS.
