Barbie-in-a-Blender Day 2023: Date, History, Barbie Facts

On July 27, we celebrate Barbie-in-a-Blender Day. Freeculture.org initiated the day to demonstrate support for the photographer and artist Tom Forsythe. This is also a day to raise awareness of the importance of free speech. The organization’s moniker has been changed to “Students for a Free Culture.” The best way to observe this day, which was first observed in 1997, is to comprehend the concepts of freedom of expression and their significance. Additionally, we can take the name of the day literally and have wild fun on this occasion.

Barbie-in-a-Blender Day: History

Many of us have at least once in our lifetimes interacted with a Barbie doll. Barbie is one of the most popular toys in the world, and children enjoy playing with toys. However, the toys before Barbie lacked the creativity necessary to captivate children’s attention. American entrepreneur Ruth Handler created the doll. She was inspired by a German doll named Bild Lilli for her invention. In 1959, Mattel, Inc. introduced the Barbie figurine.

Barbie was invented to encourage and empower young women to pursue their dreams. Barbie has played numerous roles throughout the years. She has attained the positions of astronaut, president, engineer, zoologist, etc. In a brief period of time, Barbie has become a highly influential and profitable toy brand. Toys are also a topic of controversy and discussion. The shape of Barbie is frequently criticized because it may influence young females to lose weight in an unhealthy manner.

Photographer Tom Forsythe once published images of Barbie dolls near and inside a blender. Through the photographs, he intended to criticize consumer culture and the objectification of women. However, Mattel lodged a lawsuit against him for copyright infringement after he published the images. Forsythe won the case in 2004 and was awarded $1.8 million in compensation. Barbie-in-a-Blender Day was subsequently established to honor his efforts and promote the significance of artistic freedom.
