IPL 2026 Date: The Indian Premier League, IPL 2026, was earlier expected to begin on March 26, but now the start could be delayed by a couple of days. As per a report in Cricbuzz, the BCCI has not finalised the official date yet. March 28 or 29 are under consideration. Fans will have to wait for a formal announcement, which could come by next week.

Why the Change in Schedule?

The IPL 2026 schedule has not been made public yet, mainly because of state assembly elections in Tamil Nadu, Assam, Kerala, and West Bengal. If the start is delayed, it is unclear whether the final match will also be pushed.

The IPL franchises have been informed informally about the possible change. This is not the first time a start date has shifted. In 2019, the tournament dates were adjusted due to general elections. The exact schedule will become clear once the Election Commission announces the election dates.

Teams and Promotions Ahead of the Season

The BCCI has met with all franchises and other stakeholders to make the upcoming season exciting. Broadcasters and teams are planning to promote the IPL more aggressively, similar to the NBA and NFL. Social media and traditional campaigns will be used to reach fans. Some teams will be looking to improve their performances this season. CSK has struggled in the last few years. MI has not won the title recently, and DC is still chasing their first IPL trophy.

Before IPL 2026 starts on March 28, teams got their new players at the mini‑auction in Abu Dhabi on December 16, 2025. More than 1,350 players signed up, but only 369 made the shortlist and 77 were bought by the teams.

Australia’s Cameron Green became the most expensive foreign player ever when Kolkata Knight Riders spent a lot on him. Young Indian players like Prashant Veer and Kartik Sharma were also picked for big amounts. Some famous players didn’t get picked, so teams are still talking about replacements. There is also a rule that limits foreign player salaries to ₹18 crore.
