Berlin attack: Italy, Germany tried to deport the suspect; the man served four years in Italian jail

Two European countries tried to deport Anis Amri, 24 year-old suspect in the Berlin Christmas attack, CNN reported.

He served four years of jail time in Italy for assault, arson and damaging state property.

German Police claimed on Thursday that they overheard the Tunisian man’s plan to carry out a “suicide attack” several months ago, Telegraph reported.

Italian and German authorities said that their plan to deport Amri was failed because he had no official documents.

Amri was denied asylum in Germany but was not deported because he had no official papers, and his identity could not be determined, CNN quoted German officials as saying.

On Thursday, German prosecutors said that they had found Amri’s fingerprints on the driver’s door and side of the truck which was used to carry out the attack.

According to a European arrest warrant issued by Germany, Amri used at least six aliases and three different nationalities, claiming to be Egyptian or Lebanese.

Amri’s brother told media that he was not religious in Tunisia and was not linked to religious extremism.

“When he left Tunisia he was a normal person. He drank alcohol and didn’t even pray. He had no religious beliefs. My dad, my brother and I all used to pray and he didn’t,” Walid, Amri’s brother, told media.

Amri’s family feared that he may have been radicalised by radical Islamists while he spent almost four years behind bars in Italy.
