While Congress held its nationwide shutdown raising many concerns over hike in fuel prices under PM Narendra Modi governance, the ‘#BharatBandh’ trend stood first on the Twitter’s Worldwide Trends list. The social media platform was flooded with news, posts and messages using #BharatBandh, #MehangiPadiModiSarkar.
Congress Party President Rahul Gandhi has called the shutdown demanding petrol and diesel to being under GST; joint parliamentary committee probe into the alleged irregularities in the Rafale deal; answers for depreciating rupee; and majorly the increasing prices of Petrol and Diesel.
According to Congress, 21 opposition parties supported the nationwide bandh, besides a number of chambers of commerce and traders’ associations.
Due to protest, normal life was disrupted in several parts of the country. Pro-bandh supporters forced train blockades and closure of shops as part of the Bharat Bandh against the steep rise in petrol and diesel prices. State-run buses and other vehicles kept off roads and educational institutions were shut in Karnataka, Kerala, Assam and Odisha.
