Bihar liquor law: Two brothers face 5-year jail term for drinking

In a first such conviction, a Jehanabad court has punished two brothers to five-year-jail term with fine of Rs 1 lakh under Bihar Prohibition and Excise Act, 2016. The court of Jehanabad additional district judge sentenced Mastan Manjhi and Painter Manjhi and slapped a fine of Rs 1 lakh for drinking alcohol.

The duo was arrested by the excise department team on May 29. Later, medical examination found presence of alcohol in their blood samples. They both are daily wagers and lived at Purvi Unta area of Jehanabad.

Notably, 1878 bottles of liquor were captured from the room of a private high school in Jehanabad last month. The liquor found to be manufactured in Haryana and was seized from Kishanchand Dangi Girl’s High School premises in Dhangawan area of Jehanabad.

The school administrator’s role is being probed in the case. Besides, two persons were arrested for their involvement in the illegal liquor trade.

More than 25,000 people have been facing cases under the liquor law. Apart from that, about 15,000 people have been languishing in prison.
