In a shocking case of humiliation, a 30-year-old married woman and her 27-year-old lover were tied to a tree and cruelly beaten up, allegedly on the orders of a village panchayat in Muzaffarpur in north Bihar. The panchayat at Gopinathpur village ordered to tie the lovebirds after they were caught in a compromising position. The husband of the woman was away when the incident happened.

The couple from Sitamarhi district was held hostage for about 20 hours by a mob of nearly 100 villagers. They were rescued by police only after the video of the incident went viral.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Krishna Murari Prasad confirmed the incident and said two FIRs were registered in link with the incident. “Five men have been made accused in the first FIR, lodged on the statement of the woman. The other FIR was lodged against the woman and her paramour by her husband,” he told HT.

According to DSP, the woman had expressed her wish to live with her lover. “The police will take a decision on the matter as per law,” he said. The woman has married eight years ago.
