A senior politician of the ruling Bhartiya Janata Party forecasts that the saffron party might fall short of a clear majority, making it a first, when the possibility of a coalition government has been raised, as India marches into the last 3 phases of the Lok Sabha elections 2019.

Ram Madhav, BJP national general secretary, while in conversation with a Bloomberg said, “If we get 271 seats on our own, we will be very happy.” “With NDA we will have a comfortable majority,” the leader added.

According to Madhav, BJP will make up expected losses in the north Indian states it swept in 2014 with new gains in the country’s remote northeast, as well as in the eastern states of West Bengal and Odisha. It will pursue pro-growth policies if it returns to power, and has not shifted from a focus on economic reforms to one based on populist cash handouts, he further added.

Voting for phase 5 of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections began on Monday, May 6. After today’s voting ends, the general elections would see 424 of the total 543 Lok Sabha constituencies complete the voting process. The result for all 543 seats will be declared together on May 23.

In the last Lok Sabha elections, Bharatiya Janata Party won a whopping 282 seats, 10 more than the magic number of 272, while the party in power, Congress, could register victory only on 44 seats.
