On March 31, 1885, the British placed under their protection the northern portion of the region known as Bechuanaland, which is the English translation of the Tswana phrase “Land of the Tswana.”
In 1910, the Union of South Africa was founded by the region’s main British colonies. It was anticipated that Bechuanaland would eventually join the union. This was never implemented, however. On the other hand, the regional tribal chief opposed joining the union because he believed it would be detrimental to his people. His advocacy was successful, and as a result, the British were unable to transfer the territory to South Africa. 1948 saw the establishment of apartheid in South Africa, extinguishing any prospect of integration into the country.
Due to the effects of the Second World War and a growing yearning for independence, Britain began the process of reducing its colonies, including those in Africa. This procedure was concluded by the end of World War II. In 1964, the United Kingdom approved proposals for Botswana’s transition to self-government. A new constitution was adopted on September 30, 1966, paving the way for the country’s first general elections, which led to the country’s independence. Seretse Khama was elected to his position after playing a pivotal role in the independence movement.
