Brutus Day 2024 (US): Brutus Day is observed on March 15, the Ides of March, to commemorate the treachery that a devoted and trusted companion betrayed. Marcus Junius Brutus, as you may be aware, was a conspirator in the assassination plot against Julius Caesar. Brutus Day is designated in honor of the Roman general Brutus, who achieved prominence during the reign of Caesar.

Caesar exhibited unwavering faith in his companion and general, who executed an act that elevated him to the same status as Judas Iscariot. Brutus Day functions as a poignant reminder of the enduring existence of backstabbers in contemporary society.

Brutus Day History

The sequence of occurrences preceding the Ides of March, which culminated in the assassination of Julius Caesar, originated in ancient Rome in 44 B.C. Gaius Cassius Longinus, a senior statesman, senator, and Roman general, and Marcus Junius Brutus were behind the conspiracy to assassinate Caesar. Longinus desired Caesar to step aside for various reasons; however, his primary concern was Caesar’s perilous ambition—his aspiration to attain the preeminent rulership of the Roman empire. Notwithstanding his affluence and power, Cassius was devoid of the requisite authority and influence to execute his conspiracy. He and his small coterie approached Brutus for this reason.

Brutus belonged to a long line of Roman statesmen who achieved the pinnacle of their political epochs, in addition to being Caesar’s friend. The confluence of these factors rendered Brutus the ideal individual to guarantee the conspiracy’s triumph. Using public disgrace and the influence of his closest associates, Longinus managed to persuade Brutus to align himself with his cause. Subsequently, Brutus enlisted Decimus Junius Brutus Albinus, his cousin and a close confidant of Caesar.

The trio initiated efforts in February 44 B.C. to recruit senators, who were esteemed members of society, into the conspiracy. Gaius Trebonius, Publius Casca, and Servius Sulpicius Galba are some of these individuals. After numerous deliberations and meetings, the conspirators decide to assassinate Caesar during the Ides of March senate session.

Plutarch asserts that Caesar disregarded multiple omens regarding his impending demise at the Senate during the Ides of March, one of which originated from the sorceress Spurinna. Although Caesar harbored last-minute doubts, the conspirators dispatched Albinus to reassure him that everything was in order and that his failure to appear at the Senate House would result in personal disgrace.

After Caesar was persuaded otherwise, Albinus led his close friend to his demise. This occurrence signified the initial significant act of treachery on Brutus Day. Once the conspirators had established themselves in the Senate, they surrounded Caesar strategically before stabbing him with the blades concealed in their togas. Caesar initially attempted to defend himself but abandoned his efforts upon recognizing his associate, Brutus. That day commemorated the momentous betrayal of Brutus.
