Punjab government led by Capt Amarinder Singh is likely to include the much-awaited debt relief for farmers in the budget proposals. It is expected to be announced towards the end of this month.

According to the sources, the government, with the help of a group of experts, is working on two suggestions – first, on a waiver of up to Rs 5 lakh for small and marginal farmers and second, providing relief of Rs 1 lakh to all debt-ridden farmers who have taken a crop loan.

An informal meeting of a group of experts, headed by Dr T Haque, was held in Delhi yesterday in order to look over the suggestions and amendments. Moreover, Special Principal Secretary to Chief Minister, Suresh Kumar, was also present in the deliberations.

Earlier, the group was to give its suggestions by June 7, but the date is now extended to June 15. However, Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh will take the decision thereafter.
