Cauvery water dispute: Section 144 imposed in Bengaluru

The Cauvery water dispute that has escalated tensions in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka seems to have reached its peak as Section 144 was imposed across Bengaluru. Sporadic incidents of attacks on a hotel, stone pelting, ruckus at a bank and attacks on vehicles were reported in both the States.

The Supreme Court on September 5 had ordered the Karnataka government to release 15,000 cusecs of water every day to Tamil Nadu. The order was later modified to releasing 12,000 cusecs a day till September 20. This had triggered violence across both states as the Kannadigas were not in favour of the order and the Tamils retaliated to their own being attacked in Karnataka.

Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) of 1973 empowers a magistrate to prohibit an assembly of more than ten people in an area.
