The International Lesbian and Gay Association Conference in Johannesburg, South Africa, honored the day for the first time in 1999. The celebration’s main goal was to increase public awareness of the difficulties bisexuals experience worldwide and their justifiable desire for respect.
The experiences of marginalization and discrimination that bisexuals encounter in both the straight and LGBTQ communities particularly alarmed the founders. Some people in the straight society frequently dismiss the bisexual identification as “being confused” or as “closeted gay.” Contrarily, the LGBT community occasionally labels bisexuals as “undecided” or even as betraying the LGBT movement. Bisexuals find it particularly challenging to embrace their identity in public, and it deters those who are in the closet from coming out.
Together with the LGBT community, bisexuals have historically been a population that is frequently disregarded. While many people hold the belief that bisexuality does not exist, others believe that bisexuals are more likely to engage in promiscuity. This is having a significant negative impact on some bisexual people. So much so that bisexuals have the highest rates of anxiety, despair, and STIs of any group, according to a Human Rights Council assessment. Hence, Celebrate Bisexuality Day ends up accomplishing two goals: first, to increase awareness of bisexuals worldwide, and second, to lessen the prejudice that bisexuals experience. Every year, teach-ins, poetry readings, parties, picnics, festivals, and awareness events are held to commemorate the day.
