CFCU $2.9M Settlement: Communication Federal Credit Union is getting ready to pay people across the United States after a cyber attack exposed personal information. The credit union found the break-in at the start of last year, and the problem quickly turned into a huge class action case.
Now the institution has agreed to a two point nine-million-dollar settlement, which shows how expensive data problems have become for banks and credit unions.

How the Breach happened?
The data attack lasted for 11 days between late December 2023 and early January 2024. During that short time, the attackers reached files that held very private details. The stolen information included names, home addresses, birth dates, Social Security numbers, driver’s license details, bank account numbers, and even card information.
Lawyers for the people who sued said the whole mess could have been avoided if the credit union had used stronger safety tools. The credit union said it did nothing wrong and did not break any rules. But instead of spending many years fighting in court, the institution decided to accept a full settlement to end the case.
How much can you Receive?
Everyone whose information got taken can now requestt money. People who spent their own cash after the breach can ask for repayment of their costs. They must show proof, and the highest amount they can get is seven thousand five hundred dollars. These costs can come from things like paying for identity repair, credit checks, fixing or replacing official IDs, or dealing with money lost from bad transactions.

People who did not lose money can still request a simple payment. This cash will come from what is left in the settlement fund. Right now, experts think this amount will be about 125 dollars but it might go up or down based on how many people send in claims.
Every person in the group will also get three full years of free identity watching and credit protection. The package also includes one million dollars in identity theft insurance. This type of insurance is now common because stolen data can cause trouble many years after the first breach.
