Gold Market Outlook: Gold may be nearing a short term bottom in price following its heavy correction over the last few weeks but the global gold market could be in a better place to bounce back than it was following the lengthy bear market after the 2011 price peak.

The World Gold Council stated in the latest report that two out of three of the historic factors for a gold rebound are currently present. However, speculative positioning remains high.

Gold Price Falls Sharply Following January Peak

Gold saw an incredible run in the early months of 2026 and then suffered heavy losses.

The World Gold Council’s latest assessment noted that gold ended October trading at roughly $3,913 per ounce down 6.3% for the month.

The price is now trading around 25% below its January peak of $5,405 per ounce.

Why the World Gold Council Thinks Gold Could Bounce Back?

The World Gold Council looked at three factors historically which have often been present near the end of a major correction in gold.

In the latest commentary on November 5, it noted that two of the three are currently present.

  • Price below 200 day moving average: Gold is currently trading roughly 10% below its popular 200 day moving average. This means gold has entered over sold territory.
  • Strong US dollar: The dollar has also gained strength and is now trading in its upper range.
  • Less speculation: Whilst the futures market needs to cool down further, speculative positioning remains high.

Encouragingly, looking at the history the World Gold Council found that when gold had at least two of the three factors present it had a median return of 4.2% over three months ahead. 90% of the time it returned a positive figure.

Why This Correction Is Different To The 2011 Crash?

An important note from the World Gold Council’s assessment is that this fall shouldn’t be compared to the long bear market seen after the price peaked in 2011.

The council believe that the fundamentals are very different. Despite the correction we see several factors supporting gold.

  • Central bank buying: Governments and central banks are continuing to invest in gold to diversify their foreign exchange reserves.
  • Geopolitical uncertainty: International conflict is continuing to boost demand for safe haven assets.
  • Inflation worries: Persistent inflation worries can help boost gold.
  • Financial instability: Equity and credit markets could push investors to increase their gold exposure.

Overall the WGC believes these factors mean that this correction is more likely to be short term.

Gold Demand Figures Show Central Banks And ETFs Boosting The Metal

The latest Gold Demand Trends Q3 2026 report by the World Gold Council on November 3 showed some interesting data.

Overall demand was fairly flat but we did see strong demand from institutional investors and central banks.

Here are the key figures:

  • Gold demand: 1,369 tonnes
  • Central bank demand: 321 tonnes
  • Gold ETF inflows: 211 tonnes
  • Bars/Coins: 268 tonnes
  • Jewellery: 313 tonnes
  • Technology: 85 tonnes

Central bank buying rose 42% to 321 tonnes, the largest quarterly figure since Q4 2024. This has brought year-to-date buying to 675 tonnes.

Physically-backed gold ETFs saw 211 tonnes flow into the sector. This has brought total ETF gold holdings to an all-time high of 4,256 tonnes.

However, the bar and coin market was not as strong with demand falling 19%. Jewellery also saw a 17% drop in consumption year-on-year due to high prices.

Gold Price Today: What’s Happening In The Global Market?

The latest movement on November 6, 2026 shows that gold is still under pressure.

On Friday, gold fell 1.1% in spot terms to roughly $4,044.09 per ounce. US gold futures were also weaker, falling 1.5% to $4,053.30 per ounce. This was due to rising oil prices, renewed fears of inflation and expectations that US interest rates will stay higher for longer.
