Chapter 35 Housing Benefits: Chapter 35 benefits can help eligible spouses and children pay for education and some everyday costs. But there’s an important point many students may miss. Chapter 35 doesn’t come with a separate monthly housing allowance.
The program is officially called Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance (DEA). The VA sends eligible students one monthly payment. They can use that money for school expenses or living costs such as rent, food and other bills.
This is different from the Post-9/11 GI Bill, where some eligible students can get a separate housing allowance along with other education benefits. With Chapter 35, there’s no extra VA housing payment on top of the DEA amount.

How Much Does Chapter 35 Pay in 2026?
The current Chapter 35 rates apply from October 1, 2025, through September 30, 2026. For a student attending college or a university full time, the maximum payment is $1,574 per month.
Students going less than full time get a smaller amount. A three-quarter-time student can get $1,244 per month, while a half-time student can get $912 per month.
For students taking less than half-time classes, the payment can be limited by tuition and fees. The VA lists a maximum of $912 per month for enrollment above one-quarter time and below half time. At one-quarter time or less, the maximum is $393.50 per month, or the cost of tuition and fees if that is lower.
The payment also isn’t always a full monthly amount. When a student is enrolled for only part of a month, the VA prorates the payment based on the number of days of enrollment. So, someone whose course starts near the end of the month won’t get the full $1,574 for that month.
Chapter 35 Payments Depend On Your Course
The amount a student gets depends mainly on the type of education or training and how much of the program they’re taking. The VA sends the money directly to the beneficiary.
Students should also verify their enrollment to continue receiving DEA payments. Since January 2026, VA education beneficiaries including Chapter 35 students have been required to verify enrollment each month.
For on-the-job training and apprenticeships, the 2025-26 rates are different. The maximum is $999 per month during months 1 to 6. It falls to $751 during months 7 to 12, $493 during months 13 to 18 and $251 after 19 months. To get the full amount, the trainee generally needs to work at least 120 hours in the month.

The main difference is how the money is paid. A student using qualifying Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits may receive tuition help plus a separate monthly housing allowance. Chapter 35 doesn’t work this way.
With DEA, the monthly payment is sent directly to the student as one education benefit. There isn’t another housing check from the VA. The student can use part of the DEA money for rent or other living expenses.
Chapter 35 is generally available to eligible spouses and children of Veterans or service members who meet specific VA rules. This can include situations where the Veteran has a permanent and total service-connected disability or died because of a service-connected disability. Certain cases involving service members who are missing, captured or killed in the line of duty can also qualify.
What Changes From October 2026?
The VA has already published the next set of rates for October 1, 2026, through September 30, 2027. For full-time college enrollment, the new maximum will rise to $1,621 per month. The three-quarter-time rate will be $1,281, while half-time enrollment will pay up to $939 per month.
