On his inaugural Republic Day as the Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, Bhupesh Bhagel at an event in capital Raipur announced the decision to waive irrigation tax of worth Rs 207 crores on farmers.

According to Bhagel, as many as 15 lakh farmers will be benefitted from the decision. He said that ‘Sinchai Kar’ amounting to Rs 207 crore till October 2018 will be waived. Earlier, Bhagel government had issued order that the state would return 2,000 hectare of land acquired to set up a Tata Steel factory in Bastar.

Following Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, the Chhattisgarh government had announced a loan waiver scheme.

In the run-up to the elections of the three states, the Congress President Rahul Gandhi had said that he would change the Chief Minister if they don’t waive off farmer loans in ten days after the coming the results.

On December 17, Bhagel became the Chief Minister of the state of the Congress party swept the legislative elections, winning 68 out of the 90 seats in the state. Bhartiya Janata Party, been in power for 15 years in Chhattisgarh before they were defeated.
