Congress accuses Yeddyurappa of Rs 1800 crore payoffs to top BJP leaders

Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala came out on the offensive against the Bharatiya Janata Party after a bombshell news report suggested that BS Yeddyurappa was involved in paying over Rs 1,800 crore to the BJP’s national leaders during his tenure as Karnataka chief minister.

While addressing a press conference on Friday March 22, Surjewala cited a report published in The Caravan that claimed to have a diary with notes of Yeddyurappa having paid over Rs 1,800 crore to national BJP leaders such as Arun Jaitley, Nitin Gadkiri and Rajanath Singh as well as judges and advocates.

The report stated that Yeddyurappa recorded these alleged payouts in a Karnataka state Assembly legislator’s 2009 diary, in Kannada. Surjewala, quoting the report, added that the former CM’s signature was found on every page.

“Is it true or false? The diary with BS Yeddyurappa’s sign on it was with the Income Tax Department since 2017. If that is the case, why did Modi and the BJP did not get it investigated?”

Surjewala asked the newly-appointed Lokpal to investigate the case. He further demanded answers from the BJP over the news report, asking if the allegations were true. The BJP is yet to comment on the new allegations.

Surjewala also demanded to know who the “beneficiaries” of the money funnelled by Yeddyurappa were.
