Coronation Day of Pope Benedict XVI 2023: Date. History, and Facts

Coronation Day of Pope Benedict XVI 2023: Coronation Day of pontiff Benedict XVI, observed annually on April 24, commemorates the moment when the former pontiff became the most influential figure in Catholicism. Forget Paolo Sorrentino’s fictional account of a new, younger American pontiff and any other interpretations of the papacy. When we celebrate a pope’s coronation, we honour the profound social changes he effected, the extraordinary religious fortitude he conferred upon millions, and his legacy as a historical figure whose influence will endure long after his death.

HISTORY OF CORONATION DAY OF POPE BENEDICT XVI

Joseph Alois Ratzinger was born in Marktl am Inn, Germany, on April 16, 1927, before he became the pontiff known today as Benedict XVI. Ratzinger was a distinguished theologian and prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith prior to his election as Pope. In 2013, he became the first pope to resign since Gregory XII in 1415. His papacy was marked by a decline in vocations and church attendance, divisive debates about the church’s direction, and the fallout from the church’s handling of numerous cases of sexual abuse by priests, which began in the late 1990s.

During his lengthy academic career, Ratzinger published several significant theological works, including “Introduction to Christianity” and “Dogma and Revelation,” attracting the attention of Archbishop Joseph Frings of Cologne. From 1962 to 1965, the latter asked Ratzinger to serve as his expert assistant at the Second Vatican Council. Ratzinger, one of the more progressive members of the council, stood up to those who wanted to limit reform. Nevertheless, Ratzinger’s perspectives shifted during his university years. During his time as a professor at Tübingen, he witnessed student protests and denunciations of Christianity that reminded him of Nazi tactics and led him to progressively adopt a more conservative theological perspective.

Joseph Alois Ratzinger witnessed the Papal Inauguration Mass on April 24, 2005, in St. Peter’s Square, where he received the Pallium and the Ring of the Fisherman, papal regalia. He chose the name Benedict, which is derived from the Latin word for ‘blessed,’ to honour both Benedict XV and Saint Benedict of Nursia. During World War I, Pope Benedict XV exerted ceaseless efforts to end hostilities between the combatant nations. St. Benedict of Nursia, the founder of the Benedictine monasteries, penned “The Rule of Saint Benedict,” which is regarded as the most influential volume on monastic life in Western Christianity. Each year, Pope Benedict XVI’s coronation day is celebrated to commemorate the instant he became pope.
