India overtook Britain to emerge as the country with the fourth-highest number of Covid fatalities in the world. However, India’s case fatality rate of 2 is much lower than many other countries as is its deaths per million (34).
Five most affected states by total tally of cases are Maharashtra (548,313), Tamil Nadu (314,520), Andhra Pradesh (250,000), Karnataka (182,354), and Delhi (147,391). Coronavirus tally in West Bengal has crossed the 100,000-mark with 2,931 new infections.
As many as 20,677,173 people around the world have been diagnosed with Covid-19. While more than 13,569,103 have recovered, 749,082 have died so far.

With a daily increase of 66,999 in total cases, the most in a day so far, India’s tally of coronavirus cases has risen from 2,329,638 on Wednesday to 2,396,637 – an increase of 2.9%. In a case of negligence, the bodies of two Covid-19 casualties were swapped at the Sir Sunderlal Hospital in Varanasi. Additional Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr Jung Bahadur had died on Wednesday morning after testing coronavirus positive, at the hospital. However, his family cremated another person's body, and it was later found out that the death certificate of Dr Bahadur was mistakenly placed with another person's body.
Ram Janmabhoomi Trust chief Mahant Nritya Gopal Das tested positive for Covid-19 on Thursday. Das, who is currently in Mathura, was experiencing breathing difficulties after which he underwent a test.
Agra’s Chief Medical Officer and a team of doctors have arrived in the city for his treatment. Das had travelled to Mathura for organising the Krishna Janmashtami ceremonies.

Zydus Cadila on Thursday launched the cheapest generic version of Gilead Sciences' antiviral drug remdesivir in India to treat COVID-19 following reports of shortages at hospitals in the world's third-worst hit nation. Zydus has priced it at 2,800 rupees ($37.44) per 100mg vial. It will be sold under the brand name Remdac to government and private hospitals treating COVID-19 patients, the company said in a regulatory filing.

West Bengal is now the sixth state in India to have more than 100,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus. In the past 25 days, the state has reported more than 2,000 fresh cases every single day, with the highest single-day spike reported on August 7 at 2,954 cases. Roughly 25 per cent of all cases in West Bengal are active. The state’s death toll stands at over 2,000.
