India reported a huge spike of 24,248 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours along with 425 fatalities, the Union Health Ministry said this morning. The number of recoveries stands at 4,24,433, with 19,693 people have succumbed to the disease till now.

There have been almost 20,000 deaths in India since the first case was detected there in January. India now trails only the United States and Brazil in the number of COVID-19 cases and it has recorded eight times as many cases as China, where the virus was first identified in late 2019.

But its death rate per 10,000 people is still a low 0.15, compared with 3.97 in the United States and 6.65 in the United Kingdom, according to a Reuters tally

SC Hearing on Children Being Found Covid-19 Infected in Kanpur Shelter Home

Supreme Court, referring to media reports that more than 50 children in a shelter home in Kanpur are found Covid-19 infected, directed Uttar Pradesh government to file a status report in the issue. Hearing the suo moto case relating to the protection of children from Covid-19 in shelter homes, the apex court appoints advocate Gaurav Aggarwal as the amicus curiae and lists the matter for hearing on July 13. SC also takes into note that states of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Tripura are yet to file a reply in the case and grants them time till July 10 to file the report regarding Covid-19 cases among children in shelter homes in these states.

Keisha Lance Bottoms, the mayor of Atlanta, the capital city of US state of Georgia, said she has tested positive for the novel coronavirus.
