Cristiano Ronaldo has officially returned to his ‘beloved team’ Manchester united on a £19m deal from Juventus. Between 2003-2009, the football sensation scored 118 goals in 292 games for the Red Devils, won three Premier League titles and the Champions League. This leaves no doubt as to why Manchester United fans all over the world are ecstatic.
What was even more surprising about the transfer was that the Portuguese star was seemingly destined to make a move and join the crew at the Etihad Stadium. After 12 years since his departure, Ronaldo made the bold decision to return to his former club and shock football fans worldwide. The return was overwhelming, to say the least. Old Trafford has a fresh, new feeling of enthusiasm, and nowadays, Ronaldo’s name can be heard echoing throughout the stadium.
However, how did Ronaldo eventually make the decision to choose Manchester United over Manchester City? In recent reports, the 36-year-old mentions Sir Alex Ferguson, former Manchester United manager, as ‘the key’ to his return to Old Trafford. He played a vital role in Manchester United’s great success as a club and is one of the most decorated managers in English football history. Ferguson also appears in Sportingbet’s list of Greatest English Club Managers, and for good reason too.
He guided the team to a whopping 13 Premier League titles between 1992-2013, won five FA Cups, four League Cups and two Champions Leagues. He is known as a hero amongst football fans all across the world, and naturally, he is a source of inspiration for Ronaldo as well. Speaking to United’s website, Ronaldo claimed:
“As everybody knows, since I signed for Manchester [United] at 18, Sir Alex Ferguson was the key
“I remember when we played against Manchester when I was at Sporting Lisbon.
“For me, Sir Alex Ferguson is like a father in football for me. He helped me a lot, he taught me many things, and in my opinion, of course, he had a big role because of the relationship that we had, we keep in touch all the time, and he’s an unbelievable person.
“I really like him a lot and he was the main key for me to be in the position that I am, that I signed for Manchester United.”
According to recent speculation, the team is also thrilled to have Ronaldo join their ranks. Several of the teammates engaged in WhatsApp conversations with the Portuguese footballer, which also influenced his return. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard are amongst many who are star struck by the world-class player now in their ranks. Let’s hope he can adjust easily and make a significant impact in the Red Devils’ race to winning the Premier League title.
