Cuba’s former president and father of communist Cuba Fidel Castro has died at the age of 90, Cuban state TV announced.
“The commander in chief of the Cuban revolution died at 22:29 hours this evening (8:59 am IST Saturday),” President Raul Castro said.
Raul Castro ended the announcement by shouting the slogan : “Hasta La Victoria Siempre!” (Towards victory, always!).
The revolutionary leader retreated from the public eye following an emergency surgery for intestinal bleeding.
In 2008, Fidel handed over the presidency to his brother and the then defence minister Raul Castro after a string of illnesses forced him to withdraw from the public eye.
Fidel Castro was praised as a man who had given Cuba back to the people.
Castro made his last public appearance in January, attending an art studio opening in Havana,.
Castro will be remembered ever in the history for his leadership in the revolutionary armed struggle against the dictator Fulgencio Batista.
He was the president of Cuba for more than 30 years.
