On Thursday, a case has been lodged against Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) supremo Bimal Gurung as well as his wife Asha for their alleged involvement in violence, torching and killing of one person during clashes in Darjeeling hills on the demand for a separate Gorkhaland state.

A senior police officer said, “We have lodged a case (against Gurung and his wife) and the investigation is on. There was an allegation that they were involved in the violence, arson and killing of one person during clashes on Saturday,”

Gurung and his wife, both senior GJM leaders, responding to the police case denied the all the charges against them.

“Three of our supporters were killed and they are filing cases against us. Cases should be lodged against the police and state administration for violating human rights and killing,” the GJM leader said.

Notably, Darjeeling has been in a state of unrest after  Gorkha Janamukti Morcha called for an indefinite strike in the West Bengal hills over the Gorkhaland demand. This demand was also backed by Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling.
