It was nationalized in 1997, one year after its inception, with participation from more than one hundred institutions. The day concludes with a rally or speaking engagement, which typically breaks the observance of silence and permits all participants to collectively renew their vow. At present, more than 10,000 institutions have formally registered to partake in the day of silence.
