The Liberation Front was founded in 1941 on Resistance Day, also known as the Day of Uprising Against Occupation. On April 6, 1941, the Nazis and the fascist administrations of Italy and Hungary overran Slovenia. On April 26, 1941, in response to foreign occupation, Slovenia established the Liberation Front of the Slovene Nation. The Liberation Front evolved into an anti-fascist military force.

HISTORY OF DAY OF UPRISING AGAINST OCCUPATION

Slovenia has been populated since prehistoric times. Human habitation dates back approximately 250,000 years. Slovenia was the only modern European nation to be divided and annexed by both Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy during World War II. In addition, Hungary acquired the eastern region of Prekmurje, and the newly founded Nazi puppet state of Croatia included certain Lower Sava Valley villages (N.D.H.).

In April 1941, the Slovenian National Liberation Front was established in south-central Slovenia, which Fascist Italy had occupied and renamed the Province of Ljubljana. The Yugoslav Partisans, including Slovene Partisan divisions, were established under the leadership of Communist Party leader Josip Broz Tito. In September 1989, a number of constitutional amendments were enacted in an effort to introduce parliamentary democracy to Slovenia. The Slovenian Assembly officially altered the nation’s name to the Republic of Slovenia on March 7, 1990. In April 1990, Slovenia held its first democratic elections.

The majority of electors chose to establish Slovenia as a sovereign and independent nation on December 23, 1990. The independence of Slovenia was proclaimed on June 25, 1991. Slovenia was accepted as a member of the United Nations on May 22, 1992, and the European Union recognised Slovenia as an independent state in 1992.
