In December, the company posted 178,646 domestic sales, a robust 37 % year-on-year increase, according to industry figures. At the heart of this performance was the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, the premium hatchback that topped the December sales table with over 22,000 units sold. The Baleno’s surge was nothing short of spectacular recording a 143 % year-on-year jump that helped it leapfrog other rivals and claim the month’s best-selling car crown.
Hatchbacks Shine in a SUV-Driven Era
The SUV segment has been the most sought after and is still the most popular segment in India for the last few years, but in December, hatchbacks had a spectacular comeback and the Baleno was the mainstay, followed by Maruti Suzuki’s Swift, which earned 18,767 units and an amazing 80 % growth when compared to December 2024.

Maruti’s compact-car strength was not exhausting with the Wagon R, which is another long-lasting favorite, that also obtained a spot in the top ten with over 14,500 units sold. Besides, other Maruti models including the Fronx and Brezza have helped the maker of automobiles easily to capture seven of the top ten places in the December sales ranking.

One of the noticeable trends in December was that, for the first time in many years, Hyundai models were not among the top ten.
