Delhi Fire Service New Posts: The Delhi government has approved 2,345 new posts in the Delhi Fire Service (DFS) to improve firefighting and emergency rescue work across the national capital. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced the decision on October 31, 2026. This is the biggest staff expansion in the department’s 84-year history.

The new posts will increase the total number of sanctioned positions from 3,096 to 5,441. The Delhi Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) shared the announcement on X.

“Under the leadership of Chief Minister Smt. Rekha Gupta, approval has been granted for the largest expansion in the 84-year history of the Delhi Fire Service,” the Delhi CMO wrote.

The CMO also said, “Under this historic decision, 2,345 new posts will be created, increasing the total number of sanctioned posts from 3,096 to 5,441. In emergencies, every moment is precious and every life invaluable. This decision symbolizes the government’s commitment to the safety of every citizen and every family in Delhi”.

Which Posts will be Added to Delhi Fire Service?

The new positions will cover senior officers as well as staff who work directly at fire stations and during rescue operations. The department will get more staff in several important roles, including:

  • Deputy Chief Fire Officers
  • Divisional Officers
  • Assistant Divisional Officers
  • Station Officers
  • Sub-Officers
  • Leading Firemen
  • Fire Operators
  • Peons and gardeners

The increase in staff is expected to help the department manage its work better. More officers at different levels will also help improve supervision and decision-making during emergencies.

Why Has Delhi Approved More Fire Service Staff?

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said Delhi’s growing population and changing city structure have created more challenges for emergency services. The city now has more high-rise buildings, crowded residential areas, factories and large infrastructure projects.

She said that when a fire or disaster happens, every minute matters. The department needs enough trained workers and strong leadership to reach the affected area quickly and protect people and property.

The Chief Minister also said, “The creation of 2,345 additional posts is not just an increase in staff numbers; rather, it is a visionary investment in Delhi’s public safety, institutional capacity, and future requirements”.

Delhi Home Minister Ashish Sood called the decision an important step for emergency services. He said, “There can be no compromise when it comes to the safety of citizens. Given the changing urban landscape and growing challenges, it is essential for the Fire Service to have adequate manpower and a robust supervisory framework.”

From 4 Stations in 1942 To 71 Today

The Delhi Fire Service started in 1942 with just four fire stations, 14 firefighting vehicles and 186 staff members. By 1970, it had grown to 14 stations. Today, its network has 71 fire stations, including its headquarters and training centres.

The department covers around 1,484 square kilometres across Delhi. Its work now includes not only putting out fires but also helping during accidents and other emergencies. The newly approved posts are meant to give the department more staff to handle these growing responsibilities.
