Delhi Police have arrested a man for attacking freelance journalist Aparna Kalra in Delhi’s Ashok Vihar locality on Wednesday evening.

Police told media that the assailant had tried to sexually assault her and hit aggressively with a stone after she resisted.

The accused was believed to be drinking alone at the Picnic Hut park in Ashok Vihar. Kalra was there on her evening walk.

Kalra managed to give the police a statement after gaining consciousness briefly on Wednesday night but fell unconscious soon after.

Aparna Kalra was admitted to Fortis Hospital with severe brain injuries following the attack. Doctors at the Fortis Hospital said some parts of her skull were missing.

“She had a lot of fluid (cerebrospinal fluid) collection in her brain cavities, and underwent an emergency surgery to remove it at late night,” a doctor, treating her at Fortis, was quoted by Hindustan Times as saying.

She had to undergo a repeat CT (computed tomography) scan on Thursday to check if fluid collection had stopped in her brain.

According to Police, at least four similar attacks have been reported from such public places in north and northwest Delhi since 2015.
