Delhi Pollution: NGT bans construction, SC asks Centre to respond within 48 hours.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday asked the Centre to devise a common minimum programme to control the air pollution in Delhi and NCR for the next 48 hours.

Earlier in the day, the National Green Tribunal banned any kind of construction for one week in Delhi and National Capital Region (NCR).

NGT slammed Delhi government for its inability to deal with the hazardous level of air pollution an smog in the capital.

The tribunal also lashed out against Punjab and Haryana government for not taking adequate steps to control crop burning and ordered the states to give complete mechanism on steps taken to control pollution.

“If you had provided even Rs 1,000 to the farmers, they would not have burnt the agricultural waste like this,” said the tribunal.

NGT also asked five states-Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, UP and Delhi-to do a coordination meeting with Delhi chief secretary if necessary.

NGT also questioned Delhi government’s decision to sprinkle water using cranes and asked why helicopters were not used for the same.

Several reports listed Delhi as the most polluted city in the world.

Doctors urged people to avoid highly polluted areas and advised to wear face masks.
