Delhi's LSR student dies by suicide in Telangana after asked to vacate hostel, netizens demand #JusticeForAishwarya on Twitter

In a heartbreaking incident, a second-year student of Lady Shri Ram College for Women, Delhi died by suicide last week at her hometown in Telangana, citing financial crisis in a purported suicide note.

According to several media reports, Aishwarya Reddy, a B Sc Mathematics (Honours) student, hanged herself at her home in Shadnagar of Ranga Reddy district, police said. As per her family, in a note written in Telugu, Aishwarya Reddy said she wanted to become an IAS and had come to the home after the lockdown announcement in March, but did not want to become a burden on her family.

“No one is responsible for my death. I don’t want to become a burden on the family. I can’t live without studying, I was thinking about it and this [death] is the only way left for me,” the note reads.

Her family claimed that Aishwarya was depressed after she was asked to vacate her hostel in Delhi by October-end at a time when she was trying to get a laptop for her online studies. After her request, however, she was allowed to vacate the college hostel room by November 7. Her family said Aishwarya was even planning to visit Delhi, as per media reports.

The Indian Express reported, LSR principal Suman Sharma said Aishwarya had not reached out to the college for financial assistance: “It is a huge loss for us and it is very unfortunate that we were unable to help her. However, she had never approached any teacher from the mathematics department or hostel authorities with her issues. The college has many schemes and scholarships but she never asked for assistance. We also have many mechanisms for mental health help, but unfortunately she had not reached out for those either.”

Followed by the incident, netizens on the microblogging site has been demanding justice for Aishwarya. Twitter trend shows #JusticeForAishwarya on trending list wherein people are demanding answers for the innocent life’s sacrifice.
