Launching blistering attack on Prime Minister in her maiden election rally in Uttar Pradesh, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said that the state does not need adopted son for the development.

Her comment came a day after Narendra Modi portrayed him as adopted son of UP.”The Prime Minister said he has been adopted by Uttar Pradesh. But let me ask you, does UP require adopted sons for its development?” Priyanka said while addressing her first rally in the

“The Prime Minister said he has been adopted by Uttar Pradesh. But let me ask you, does UP require adopted sons for its development?” Priyanka said while addressing her first rally in the Gandhis’ home turf of Rae Bareli.

“UP doesn’t need a leader from outside. All youth of the state can lead UP, build a new UP.” she added.

“What kind of leader will you choose? One who doesn’t keep his promises or someone who will work for the people of this state?” Priyanka said.

Throwing her weight behind the Congress’ longstanding pitch for youth empowerment, Priyanka said, “Every youth in Uttar Pradesh has the potential to be a leader. They will contribute to the state’s development.”

Much like her brother, Priyanka continued her salvo against PM Modi on the subject of demonetisation. She said the poor and the farmers had suffered after the November 8 move which wiped out 86 per cent of the nation’s cash currency.

Commenting on PM Modi’s promises to women of the state, Priyanka said, “I am a woman…Who has committed the most number of atrocities against women, poor. Wasn’t making you stand in queues atrocities against women.” Priyanka attended the rally two-day days after BJP leader and Union Minister Smriti Irani claimed the Congress leader was not campaigning as she had no answers to people’s question in Uttar Pradesh.

Priyanka went on to question the track record of the Prime Minister as an MP from Varanasi.

“What has he done for Varanasi in the last three years? nothing,” she said, adding that her father Rajiv Gandhi had developed his constituency Amethi in a way befitting of a PM.

She also requested the electorate to join hands and help the SP-Congress combine win the elections.

Priyanka was accompanied by her brother and Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi during the campaign tour of the district.

Earlier, during his speech, Rahul hit out at Prime Minister Narendra for promising to waive loans of small farmers if BJP is voted to power. Rahul drew a parallel between Modi’s ‘achche din’ promise with ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’ film. “But after 2.5 years of becoming PM, he became Gabbar Singh of ‘Sholay”, Rahul said.

In a dig to PM Modi’s statement that he is the ‘adopted’ son of Uttar Pradesh, Rahul said, “Modi ji, relations are not just made by saying, but by maintaining them.”

In a dig on PM Modi’s  Make in India programme, Rahul said, “PM says Make in India, but wherever you see, it is Made in China, Made China. Why? Because PM served only 50 families of the state.”

Rahul said that PM Modi had earlier said that Varanasi was his “mother”. But he didn’t do anything for his “mother”, the Congress vice-president said.

“PM Modi snatched away your food park, your jobs, ‘Made in Raebareli’. Why? Because he had to take revenge,” he added.

Taking a dig at PM’s promise to farmers, Rahul said, “Modiji remembers farmers only during elections. He said that farmers loan would be waived if BJP government comes to power in UP. UPA had also waived farmers’ loan. Was there Congress government in UP then.”Congress President Sonia Gandhi represents Rae Bareli in the Lok Sabha, while Rahul is MP from neighbouring Amethi. Sonia has stayed away from poll campaign so far.
