Kolkata Metro Durga Puja: Durga Puja in Kolkata is always huge, and this year the Metro Railway is making it even better. From September 27 to October 2, the Metro will run 3,021 special trains. This is 651 more services than what they gave last year. The idea is simple, more trains means people can move faster and easier during the festival days when the city is full of lights, music, and pandal-hopping crowds.
Kolkata Metro Durga Puja: New Routes
For the very first time, these special trains are not only on the old Blue Line. They will also run on three more lines, which are Purple Line from Joka to Majerhat, Yellow Line from Kavi Subhas to Beliaghata, and Green Line from Esplanade to Salt Lake Sector V. This means people can reach more parts of the city without stress and enjoy Puja without worrying about long waits.
Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains to Start After Second Rake Ready Post October 15: Railway Minister
The officials said the Metro can now carry up to 9.06 million passengers during the six days of the festival. Last year, it carried only 4.1 million, so this is a big jump, almost 120% more than before. In 2023, the services were very limited and only worked on the Howrah Maidan to Esplanade section. This year the reach is far bigger.
Huge Crowd
Even before Puja started, the crowd was already showing big numbers. On September 24, the Metro carried 8,36,000 passengers, which is more than last year’s Dwitiya day count of 7,93,000. On that single Wednesday, the Blue Line alone had 6,10,000 riders and the Green Line carried 2,05,000.
The Smart Card system is also making things smoother. Earlier the card’s validity was just one year, but now it has been extended to ten years. Because of this, more people are buying it. By 5 PM on September 25, the Metro had sold 2,839 Smart Cards, while on the day before it was only 1,739.
