Eco friendly: This school thumbs down even the ball-pens, bans all plastic products

Much to one’s surprise a Panchayat Union Middle School in Pudukkottai district of Tamil Nadu has banned the use of plastic in the school campus. The school management is so specific about removing the plastic usage that even the stationery materials that students use in the school are prohibited strongly in the campus.

According to a report in the New Indian Express, the management of the Middle School in Avanathankottai West has shunned even the use of pens, bags, bins, trays, chairs, and tables that are made of plastic. The school campus is all done up with the posters emphasizing the need for the plastic-free environment.

There is a total of 73 students enrolled in the school and the management is helping them by providing them alternative products made of anything but plastic. There are products made of metals, woods, and nature-friendly materials that are now used instead of pens, bags, water bottles.

The school’s management has taken this initiative in keeping with the government’s order to curtail the plastic usages. Even the parents of the kids seem to have taken the pledge to avoid plastic use in their lives. The parents of a class 8th student give her water in a small stainless steel container instead of giving in a plastic bottle.

“Most of the stationery we use daily is of plastic. For some time until the alternative arrangements are made, we carried drinking water in small stainless steel containers,” said the class VII student of the Middle School.
