With UP all set to undergo Assembly polls from February 11 to March 8, Congres and Samajwadi Party appear to have agreed to launch a joint election campaign in the state.

According to a Times of India report, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi will lead the election campaign along with Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav and his wife Dimple Yadav.

The sources quoted by TOI said that formal announcement were delayed because of the ongoing feud within the Samajwadi Party.

The campaign is most likely to be launched on January 13, the day Election Commission is expected to make a final decision on the petition submitted by Akhilesh and Mulayam claiming the ‘cycle’ symbol.

On Tuesday, senior Congress leader urged the  “secular forces” to close ranks on Tuesday, a remark seen as ending the ambiguity around the Congress-SP alliance.

Akhilesh had held preliminary discussions with Priyanka in December, in which both sides showed their willingness to align ahead of the polls.

Sheila Dikshit, Congress’s chief ministerial face in UP, has earlier suggested that she will step aside to accommodate Rahul and Akhilesh if they take centrestage in the UP polls.
