A recent academic paper written by Santosh Mehrotra and Jajati K Parida, published by the Centre of Sustainable Employment at the Azim Premji University on Thursday, October 31 concluded that the total employment in the country saw a dip between years 2011-12 and 2017-18.

According to the authors – Mehrotra, Professor of Economics at Jawaharlal Nehru University, and Parida a teacher at the Central University of Punjab – “total employment during 2011-12 and 2017-18 declined by 9 million. This happened for the first time in India’s history”.

The paper claim that employment decreased from 474 million in 2011-12 to 465 million in 2017-18 according to Indian Express report.

Earlier, months after rejecting the claim by a leaked report that India’s unemployment rate had touched a 45-year high, the government admitted the same with the latest data showing that joblessness had indeed touched 6.1 per cent in the 12-month period from July 2017 to June 2018.

The official data had shown 7.8 per cent of all employable urban youth as being jobless during the survey period, while the percentage for the rural areas stood 5.3 per cent.
