Engineer’s Day: In India, Engineer’s Day is celebrated on September 15 every year to pay tribute to the greatest Engineer Bharat Ratna Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya. He was also known as Sir MV and father of Modern Mysore for his outstanding contribution to society.

Mokshagundam Visvesvar was born in 1861 in Muddenahalli village of South Karnataka. He became India’s best civil engineer, dam builder, economist, and statesman. Mokshagundam invented the Block System which helped harnessing water resources across the country.

1. In 1912, M Visvesvar was appointed as the Diwan of Mysore, he also worked as a chief engineer and constructed the Krishna Raja Sagara Dam in Mysore. Because of him, Mysore had a major transformation in terms of agriculture, irrigation, industrialization, education, banking, and commerce.

2. Visvesvar completed his Bachelor in Arts from the University of Madras and later pursued Civil engineering from Pune’s College of Science.

3. In 1903, he made automatic water floodgates that were installed in Pune at the Khadakwasla reservoir.

4. Mokshagundam was one of the renowned precursors of economic planning in India.

5. In 1917, he opened Government Engineering College in Bengaluru which was later renamed in his honour as University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering.
