Engineer’s Day is celebrated on September 15 in India as a tribute to the greatest Indian engineer and to commemorate the birth anniversary of Mokshagundam Visvesvaray, popularly known as Sir MV. He was a prolific civil engineer, scholar, educationist, economist and statesman of the 20th century.

The day is observed to commemorate the great work of engineers, and to encourage and thank those engineers who are committed to improving our respective cities and countries.

On the occasion of his 159th birthday, we bring you the meaning and history of the commemoration. From 1912 to 1918, when Visvesvaraya was Diwan of Mysore, his work transformed this place into a “model state”.

Visvesvaraya was born on September 15, 1861, in a village called Muddenahalli in Karnataka. He studied Bachelor of Arts (BA) at the University of Madras and pursued civil engineering at the College of Science in Pune.

Visvesvaraya was the chief engineer for the construction of the biggest Krishna Raja Sagara Dam in Mysore in Asia at that time. In 1909, when Hyderabad was in danger of getting flooded, Visvesvaraya who was the special consultant engineer, used his creative engineering work to rescue Visakhapatnam port from sea erosion.

Because of his work, he was called the ‘Father of Modern Mysore’. Visvesvaraya invented the block system, closed the water overflows and designed and patented the floodgates installed at the Khadakwasla reservoir in Pune in 1903.

Visvesvaraya established the Government Engineering College in Bengaluru in 1917 and was later named University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering in his honour.

For his contribution to the building of India, the government awarded him ‘Bharat Ratna’ in 1955.

He was also awarded the British knighthood by King George V, ‘Sir’ before his name. The famous engineer, Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya passed away in 1962.
