University Grants Commission has sent a circular to higher educational institutions, asking them to encourage students to join the centre’s cashless economy campaign by educating the common man on different modes of digital payments.

Students participating in government’s cashless economy campaign will be rewarded with extra credits from December 12, Times of India reported.

“Directors of all institutions should ensure that the necessary credit in academics for project work is given to the student volunteers of Visaka,” an HRD ministry note said.

Vittiya Saksharta Abhiyan (Visaka) is a scheme launched by the Human Resource and Development ministry under which head of the institutions and faculty members have been advised to direct the students to encourage and motivate all payers and payees to use a digitally enabled cashless economic system for fund transfers.

The note on HRD ministry’s website also asked head of higher educational institutions to plan for a cashless campus, within a limited timeframe, for all transactions within the campus.

Encouraging students to volunteer in the cashless economy drive, the note said “they (Students) need to further educate their family members and people in their immediate surroundings and motivate them for digital transactions. NCC/NSS volunteers of an institute may take up a major market and interact with shop owners, including vendors, and their associations with an objective of developing a cashless market focusing on each point of sale.”

According to a Telegraph report, HRD ministry also appealed educational institutions not to receive fees, fine or any deposits from students in cash.

The ministry also launched a webpage where students can enroll as volunteer and give continuous suggestions/ feedbacks on the initiative.
