Farmers will get every drop, won’t let it go to Pak: Modi on Indus Water Treaty

In a bid to woo Punjab’s farmers ahead of Assembly elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said water that belongs to India cannot be allowed to go to Pakistan with reference to the Indus Water Treaty.

“The fields of our farmers must have adequate water. Water that belongs to India cannot be allowed to go to Pakistan…Government will do everything to give enough water to our farmers,” said PM Modi in Bathinda where he inaugurated a new AIIMS.

The prime minister said he is concerned more about the welfare of farmers than election arithmetic.

The Indus water treaty, signed by India and Pakistan in 1960, administers how waters of the Indus and its treaties are utilised. The treaty gives India control over Beas, Ravi and Sutlej rivers, while Indus, Chenab and Jhelum are governed by Pakistan. The Indus River flows out of India which, however, can use just 20 per cent of its water.

“We formed a task force on Indus water treaty to ensure farmers of Punjab and other states get each drop of water due to them,” PM Modi said.

On Surgical Strike

Raking up the issue of the Indian Army’s surgical strike along the LoC in September, Modi extolled the soldiers saying “Jab hamare bahadur jawano ne surgical strike kiya, seema paar hadkamp mach gaya (Look at the valour of our army jawans. When they conducted the surgical strike, it created havoc across border)”

“When a school in Peshawar was attacked, every Indian was sad and shed tears. People of Pakistan should tell their rulers to fight corruption, fake notes and black money. They must talk to their rulers and decide if they want to fight against India,” he added.

Modi’s visit is also significant for Punjab’s ruling alliance of the Shiromani Akali Dal and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The alliance has been in power in Punjab since 2007.

Demonetisation

Hitting out at those accusing the government of not being prepared for demonetisation, Modi said they are actually pained that they themselves did not get time to make any preparation

Had these people got even 72 hours, they would have lavished praise, he said a day after the opposition launched a massive attack on the government over the issue

Speaking at a book launch event here, Modi said there has been little criticism of the demonetisation decision

“But still some people are criticising saying that the government did not make ample preparation. I think that is not the issue that the government did not make ample preparation

I think the pain of such people is that the government did not give a chance to make any preparation,” Modi said

“If these people had got 72 hours to make their preparation then they would have lavished praise that there is no one like Modi,” he stressed
