FASTag Rules: FASTag users, listen up! The government has made some important changes to FASTag rules, but these changes will only affect drivers in Maharashtra. Starting April 1, 2025, FASTag will become mandatory at all toll plazas in the state. This new rule aims to make toll payments faster and reduce traffic jams at toll booths.

What is FASTag?

FASTag is a small electronic tag that you stick on your vehicle’s windshield. You need to recharge it from time to time, just like you recharge your mobile phone. When you drive through a toll plaza, a machine scans the tag, and the toll amount is automatically deducted from your prepaid balance. This means you don’t have to stop and collect a ticket, you can just drive through

New FASTag Rule in Maharashtra

From April 1, 2025, all vehicles in Maharashtra must use FASTag at toll plazas. According to TOI, Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has made this rule to create a cashless payment system. This will help reduce long lines and traffic congestion at toll booths.

If you don’t use FASTag, you can still pay the toll using cash, card, or UPI. However, you will have to pay double the toll fee. The MSRDC has already shared a notice to inform everyone about this change.

Exemptions for Some Vehicles

Not all vehicles need to follow this rule. School buses, light motor vehicles, and state transport buses are exempt from using FASTag at five specific entry points into Mumbai. These include toll plazas at Mulund West, Mulund East, Airoli, Dahisar, and Vashi.

The new FASTag rule will be strictly followed on major highways like the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, the Old Mumbai-Pune Highway, and the Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Expressway.

Where to Get FASTag

You can buy a FASTag at toll booths, bank branches, or online through bank websites, digital wallets, and payment apps. You can also use the MyFASTag app to get one. Once you have your FASTag, recharging it is easy. You can use apps like PhonePe, Google Pay, Amazon Pay, and many others to add money to your FASTag account.
